New Zealand students shine on the world stage at the 36th International Biology Olympiad in the Philippines
New Zealand students have delivered an exceptional performance at the 36th International Biology Olympiad (IBO), held from 20–27 July 2025 in Quezon City, Philippines.
Demonstrating the strength of Kiwi science talent, all four team members returned with medals—an outstanding result at the world’s premier high school biology competition involving 77 countries.
Oren Dabbach (Pinehurst College) – Silver Medal (Top 30%, World Rank: 73rd)
Jamie Cartwright (Glendowie College) – Bronze Medal
Sophie Main (Glendowie College) – Bronze Medal
Jessica Wu (St Cuthbert’s College) – Bronze Medal
The team was led by Dr Angela Sharples, MNZM (Matamata College) and Mr Liam Hewson, MSc (University of Otago). Their results reflect the calibre of New Zealand’s science education and the commitment of the NZIBO programme to developing future scientific leaders.
This medal sweep further cements New Zealand’s reputation as a top-performing nation in international biology and continues our 21-year medal-winning streak at the IBO.
The NZIBO Committee extends its sincere thanks to Science OlympiaNZ for their financial support enabling the students to travel to the Philippines, and to the University of Auckland School of Biological Sciences for their continued support of the training and selection camp.
