The 2015 NZIBO team of Zhong Huang, MacLeans College, Cherie Jia, Auckland International College, Nikita Lyons, Waikato Diocesan School for Girls and Ery Zhu, Avondale College is delighted to report their success at the 26th International Biology Olympiad in Aarhus, Denmark. Zhong Huang gained a Silver medal while Nikita Lyons and Ery Zhu were each awarded a Bronze medal. The medals were presented in a lovely ceremony following the Gala dinner. The students were very pleased with their success as were the Team leaders Dr Heather Meikle and Mr Nick Bryant. “Our students did NZIBO proud and their success reflects their ability to synthesise answers from current science research information. The cod dissection was a credit to the team despite one student having an allergic reaction to the fish”.
The IBO in Denmark was extremely well organised with students and jurors from 61 countries attending. This was the first IBO where students submitted their answers to the practical sections using electronic tablets. They also uploaded photos of their dissections and practical work as part of the reporting process. The team returns to NZ early on Tuesday morning.
